(Groundhog Day)

Groundhog Day is one of those holidays that I don't even try to explain to the French. I can just imagine the conversation.

"Happy Jour de la Marmotte!"
What?
"Well, it is a holiday in the US.."
You silly Americans. Why is it a holiday?
"Well, I don't know. It supposed to predict whether there will be more winter or not."
How is a marmotte supposed to predict the weather?
"Uh, well, whether or not it sees it's shadow.... I don't know... Don't ask me...."

Marmotte is also a term for someone who sleeps a lot, which is certainly something I did today. Guess I was tired from being sick all week, because I slept until 9, then took a three hour nap on the couch.

Yes, I am a marmotte and proud of it.

The Late Bloomer a dit…

Oh hey, Megan -- I am the QUEEN of the marmottes, trust me! For years friends of mine here in France have always teased me on the fact that I love to sleep and seem to do a LOT of it -- and NOW it's even WORSE! Being pregnant and all I guess makes you want to really sleep all the time...

I slept through the night, eight hours, from Friday to Saturday, but then after getting up and going and heading to a shopping center around noon, by 1:00 I was exhausted and dying to take a nap! I slept in the train ride from Paris to Le Havre, and then slept something like nine hours that night. And on Sunday -- all over again, long nap in the afternoon, and a full night's sleep.

My boyfriend keeps thinking I'm never going to make it through the night after sleeping "so much" as he sees it during the day, but every day I seem to sleep more! It's just crazy...

Hope you're feeling MUCH better now and are able to attack your new job afresh! Take good care.

Starman a dit…

I would guess that there are a lot of American traditions the French find strange. Like capitalizing the names of countries and people.

Betty Carlson a dit…

Heck, I haven't even thought about Groundhog Day for years! Thanks for the little reminder...
