Time for my annual torturing at the opthamologists office (no idea how that is spelled, in English or French, and I cannot for the life of me pronounce it correctly in French- EYE DOCTOR). My eyes had been giving me trouble lately. And by trouble I mean- Bright Red about a half an hour after inserting contact lenses that requires immediate switching to glasses and red eye for about a week.
I went to his office a few weeks ago after work. He gave me a week's treatment of eye drops against some sort of infection and told me to come back in two weeks.
Yesterday I returned, though to his other office this time. No idea why he has two separate offices. My appointment was at 5:45. I left work on the dot of 5, then cursed traffic the whole way back to Marseille, whereupon I took the metro and then sprinted to his office. Sure glad I bothered since I didn't see him until 7. This time, they dilated my eyes so that no blue was showing, then proceeded with this horrid glass that is put DIRECTLY on the eyeball. What is worse, you have to press your eyeball against this glass. Yes, I do love pressure on my eyeball, thank you. Finally it was done and I was weeping yellow tears (from some solution they put in my eyes). They gave me some contacts and told me to return in two weeks. Sigh. Seriously starting to consider laser surgery now. I will talk to him next appointment about that. Oh yeah, it is now 2 pm the following day, and my pupils have not yet returned to normal.

Oh, I can seriously relate to the eye problems...! Two years ago overnight I couldn't wear my contacts anymore, I had some kind of irritation/infection, and for months I had to wear my glasses. When I went back to the eye doctor's, he told me I would have to stop soft lenses completely and change to gas permeable (read: hard!) lenses...
Since then, I've tried to adapt to the hard lenses, but they are definitely tough to wear, especially after years of wearing the soft disposable ones. So now I wear my glasses to work during the week, and I try to save my contacts for special occasion, the evenings, etc...
I actually have always hated wearing my glasses, but I've resigned myself now -- what can I do? I don't want to ruin my eyes, and I think sitting in front of the computer all day, in my dry office at work, has just made things worse and worse. Ironically, while I was away on vacation in August, I was able to wear my contacts for 2 weeks without a problem...
Solution? Wish I could leave the city, to be honest! The doctor told me I couldn't be a candidate for the laser surgery because my correction is too strong -- that's right, my eyes are THAT BAD!!
Hang in there, it should get better soon. You're not alone!
Although I only wear glasses for working on the computer, I've become rather familiar with the eye business because Mon Coeur is an opticien and during a large part of my "free time" I'm at the store helping him.
Just a word of warning... and it may depend on the city, too... but France seems to be a bit behind on the laser surgery front so you have to be really careful who does it (their training, experience, etc.) You're better off using a professeur or someone really in the know than an every day ophtalmo. I've seen a few bad cases of laser surgery gone wrong here (and my mom's a very happy candidate of a US laser surgery gone very right!)
But believe me, I understand the frustration of eye care here in France...
I know a lot of people who have had the laser treatment and they all love it and swear it is the best thing they've ever done for themselves. One guy's eyes were so bad that without contacts, he was considered legally blind. Now his vision is 20-20 and he blesses the day he decided to have it done.
